First point about the interception rates to consider is that _we don't really know the interception rates_. Video evidence of the April strikes impacts certainly doesn't suggest the claimed 99% missile (as opposed to drone) interception rates. 

I don't begrudge Israel and the US for lying about it because lying about it is what you do in these circumstances (although maybe being a little less blatant about it would have helped). I do however begrudge everyone else for falling for it hook line and sinker. 

With that in mind, the real interception rate was apparently still fairly high. In April the ballistic missile attacks were telegraphed by the slower drone and cruise missile launches which made the timing for ballistic missiles easier to predict so that was probably a factor. The precise mix of older and newer missiles used would be very helpful but difficult to know - older types being naturally easier to intercept.

I have no special knowledge of this, but my interpretation had been that Iran didn’t really want to cause a lot of damage. The regime doesn’t feel strong domestically or abroad, and they got more than they bargained for with the Hamas attacks. My sense is that they didn’t feel they could lose face by not answering Israeli provocations, but they didn’t want to actually start a hot war. By launching a lot of missiles, they could still seem tough domestically, but by warning the US &amp; Israel beforehand, and by sending technologically weaker missiles they could avoid bringing too much heat on themselves. 

Subsequent months have shown this strategy (which worked initially) wasn’t quite adequate. Israel essentially disarmed (for now?) Hamas and Hezbollah, and showed they could hit sites in Iran at will. It’s unclear whether Iran has missiles that could be more effective against Israel, but it seems like they can’t afford to fight a real war and they’re just hunkering down hoping their bluffs aren’t called. 

So, you asked a technical question, but I think there’s a geopolitical answer. Anybody with specialist knowledge may contradict (and should be listened to), and if Iran end-runs to nuclear weapons all bets will be off, but I think the answer is that the mullahs can’t afford an all-out war so they’ve been avoiding one.

Not even close, and you clearly need to do some reading on the physics behind ballistic missiles before assuming that (nuclear) ICBMs are in any way comparable to what Iran was using. In the most basic terms, most of the BMD used by Israel/US/etc would be totally useless against ICBMs.

Iran has never attacked Israel before 2024, and the first attack was extremely telegraphed. By contrast Israel has been trying very hard to get Iran to attack directly, which would provoke a reaction from the US and Europe, it's a trap. Israel could have never invaded Gaza if Hamas had not attacked first, similar to the Gulf of Tonkin and 9/11.


If Iran wants to it can inflict horrific damage, but it won't do so unless it has no other option left. Syria falling to ex Isis Israeli proxies might trigger them to do just that. They've also gotten very close to Russia and by extension North Korea, which could mean all 3 nations are preparing for a coordinated start of WW3, China also seems extra focused on Taiwan.


Their first move probably won't even using conventional weapons, a cyber and/or biological attack are much more effective and allow for the attacker to deny responsibility, maybe claim it was a lab leak.


The problem is retaliation, no matter how successful Iran's missiles are, it can't wipe out Israel and certainly not the US/nato which will retaliate. Especially in recent years bioweapons have advanced faster than ever before, allowing for the first time to target specific DNA, of a specific population or even on an individual level, like a low collateral nuke.

This is going to be a hot take for this subreddit, but this is legitimately a nothing burger. Iran let them know way ahead of time that they were going to fire those missiles and were so that they would essentially hit nothing. And those missiles didn't even make it to the ground. Iran did this exact tactic recently, and basically they do this because they don't want a war they know they can't win. Honestly, what this tells me is that Iran will literally take missile strike after missile strike and not do anything about it. They have no interest in a war.
